I have seen several things that discussed a 1966 Chevelle with a factory-ordered 427 big block. Was this in fact an option? Or was it a dealer installed option?

Over on a different forum, someone said:
Don’t think so, although some dealers reportedly did engine swaps. GM had a 1hp per 10 lb limit in the mid 60’s which would have ruled out a 427 Chevelle.
Can anyone verify this is the case?

I bought a new 1966 SS396 Chevelle mid-year after they were introduced. Mine was ordered as a 396-360, 4 speed, F41 car. The dealer had a 427-425 long block that was a replacement L72 engine ordered for a 427 Biscayne, but the Biscayne was wrecked before it could be installed. The Chevrolet dealer pulled my 396, dropped in the 427, and the Parts Manager ordered SS427 grille and 427 fender emblems, and most people thought the car was a factory option….but Chevy never made a 427 engine equipped 1966 SS Chevelle.

I have owned seven 66SS Chevelles. The second one I bought I negotiated with the dealer to get a 396-375, and the owner of the dealership asked me if I was willing to pay for a 427-425. I told him yes, he submitted the paperwork ( COPO?), and my SS came with the 427-425 engine!

I had a buddy who had a fairly new ’66 SS Chevelle which was very fast. Being a kid back then without a lot of resources we still knew this car was different. It had solid lifters with an aluminum intake and a double-pumper Holley carb, not your normal 396, like the badging implied. Could it have been the 427ci Mystery Motor?
