Did the 1966 Chevelle have a factory 427 engine option?

I have seen several things that discussed a 1966 Chevelle with a factory-ordered 427 big block. Was this in fact an option? Or was it a dealer installed option?

1966 Chevelle SS 427

Over on a different forum, someone said:

Don’t think so, although some dealers reportedly did engine swaps. GM had a 1hp per 10 lb limit in the mid 60’s which would have ruled out a 427 Chevelle.

Can anyone verify this is the case?

I have owned six 1966 SS Chevelles. I ordered an L78 Chevelle SS new, triple black. The day it came in on the trailer the dealer had factory approval to swap the L78, 396-375, for a crate L72, 427-425, and to continue my new car warranty. The Sales Manager told me he processed a “special order” to accomplish this. I didn’t question how he did it, just paid the extra $337.55 and enjoyed the ride!
